Garni

The bucket list will definitely start with Garni, a village located just a short drive from Yerevan. Garni transports visitors back in time to pre-Christian Armenia. It’s a unique window into Armenia’s pagan past, where history and natural beauty converge to create an unforgettable experience.

At the heart of the village is a pagan Garni Temple, an extraordinary example of Greco-Roman architecture. Although the exact date is not clear, the structure probably dates back to the 1st century. It was later converted into the royal summer residence of the Armenian kings.

In addition to the temple, each visitor must stroll to the majestic Symphony of Stones, basalt columns in the Garni gorge.

When walking in Garni you can enjoy local food, especially delicious homemade gata, in one of the restaurants having spectacular views of the gorge.

Byurakan

Another village located less than an hour’s drive from Yerevan is Byurakan famous for its observatory. The latter was founded during Soviet times and has several telescopes. You can book a tour and even visit the observatory at night to enjoy watching the night sky.  

Besides, Byurakan has recently become a popular spot for foodies with guesthouses and gastro yards offering local produce. Areni

Wine enthusiasts must not miss a visit to Areni, a charming village where winemaking was thriving literally during ancient times. It’s not a joke. Areni is home to the Areni-1 cave complex, an archaeological treasure having a 6,100-year-old history. An ancient winery considered one of the oldest in the world was discovered here several years ago.

Therefore, Areni Cave can be named the cradle of winemaking. In addition, the world’s oldest known leather shoe alongside ancient winemaking equipment was discovered here. Here travelers can explore the 14th-century Holy Mother of God Church, constructed by medieval architect Momik.

After exploring the history of the region, one can have a meal with a glass of local wine and visit one of the vineyards.

Odzun

A trip to Lori province is an unforgettable experience thanks to its picturesque views of mountains and stunning Debed gorge. One of the province’s gems is Odzun with its church dating back to the 5th–7th century. The name of a village originates from “otsel”, an Armenian word meaning “to ordain”.

Odzun was a home to Catholicos Hovhannes Odznetsi who was born here and educated in the church school. The basilica has a unique structure with 2 rectangular rock obelisks in huge blocks of stones. According to the legend, the funerary monuments were donated to the Armenians by the Indian king.

Besides its historical significance, the village is embraced by a breathtaking landscape. You can stay at a local B&B and feel the hospitality of the villagers. The surrounding area is a great spot for hiking where you can stumble upon ancient khackars or a monastic complex like Horomayr Monastery. It is located at the top of the cliff and one of its walls is a wall of the canyon.

Dsegh 

One of the amazing villages to visit in Armenia is Dsegh, a place that combines natural beauty and tranquility. This enchanting village is associated with iconic Armenian poet Hovhannes Tumanyan who was born here in the 19th century.

The Tumanyan House Museum which offers a glimpse of the poet’s life and work is one of the spots that tourists visit here. However, another gem is the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside that inspired the famous writer.

Dsegh’s picturesque setting is ideal for hiking, horseback riding, and cycling. When hiking near the village you can come across the ruins of a chapel or small khachkars. Tatev

A small village in Syunik province is arguably the most famous tourist destination in Armenia’s south. The picturesque village on the verge of a gorge shares its name with the iconic Tatev Monastery, which looms majestically nearby.

Dating back to the 9th century, the monastery which served as a religious and educational center in medieval times is located on a large plateau near the village. The complex consists of several chapels, churches, chapels, a library, and cells where monks lived in the Middle Ages.  

Nearby attractions include the “Wings of Tatev” one of the world’s longest aerial tramways.
