Armenia may not be the first destination that comes to mind when thinking about extreme sports. However, during recent years the number of extreme adventures you can join in Armenia has been rising. Let’s explore the opportunities for extreme activities in Armenia.

Adrenaline junkies can enjoy water sports, paragliding, or rafting with breathtaking views of mountains and medieval churches in the background. The waters of Lake Sevan invite windsurfers and boat riders, while mountain bikers can find their nirvana on the challenging trails of Kotayk or Tavush provinces.

Thrill-seekers preferring winter sports can have a good time in the ski resort of Tsakhkhadzor. For those who want to relax and enjoy picturesque views, horseback riding through the green mountains of Tavush or Vayots Dzor is a tranquil escape. As Armenia keeps getting into extreme adventure, it’s turning into a great spot for adventure lovers who can get the most out of stunning scenery, ancient history, and delicious cuisine.

Ziplines

The popularity of ziplining has been growing with more exciting locations for adventure lovers. You can find ziplines in the Hrazdan Gorge or in the mountains of Tsakhkhadzor and Tavush province. Thus, ziplining in Armenia is a thrilling adventure that enables one to experience an adrenaline rush in the diverse terrain.

Yenokavan village in Tavush province has become “the capital” of ziplines. Yell Extreme Park located near the village has five different lines with the length ranging from 150 to 750 meters. The park started with zipline flights but now offers a range of activities, including off-road, rope park, and horseback riding.

Another option is to travel to the resort town of Tsakhkadzor to glide through the air at a height of 130 meters. For less experienced folks, there is a cute zipline above Lake Parz near Dilijan. Here you can take the zipline even if you are afraid of heights as it is only a couple of meters above the lake.

Paragliding

Providing a bird’s-eye view of Armenia’s diverse landscape, paragliding is an awe-inspiring journey for any adventurer. There are several companies in Armenia offering paragliding and training with experienced coaches. Thanks to many sunny days, the country is a great place for extreme enthusiasts.

One of the popular spots is Lake Sevan, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. Here you can soar above its turquoise waters and take in the surrounding mountain views. The sensation of a free flight is an unforgettable experience for those who want to explore Armenia all at once. Other spots are in Aparan, Teghenis, and Hatis mountains.

The instructors will prepare you for a short tandem flight or a flight of up to 1 hour for experienced paragliders. Whatever you choose, you will have unforgettable memories and GoPro videos to show your family and friends.

Rafting

Armenia has many mountainous rivers with a powerful flow. However, the main rafting destination is Debed Canyon in Lori Province, around a 3-hour drive from the capital city Yerevan. Typically, the rafting season lasts from May to September. You always have to check the water level because sometimes it is dangerous to raft.

Anyway, even beginners can raft here after they pass a safety briefing.  In addition to the rafting trip, there is also jumping into the water and other activities. Most importantly, before going on a rafting adventure you can tour the nearby historical sites that include 2 UNESCO-listed monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin.

Hot Air Balloons

Hot air ballooning is also one of the attractions that offers Armenians and foreigners to discover the beauty of mountains and landscapes. Luckily, Armenia has certified operators that provide commercial services.

Armenia has already hosted several balloon fests. The last one was organized in 2022 when around 20 balloons rose into the sky from Republic Square. The balloon is usually designed for 2-12 people. However, tourists willing to fly have to follow the announcement of organizers. The location and other details of the flight depend on weather conditions. Anyway, whether you are a true adventurer or planning a romantic trip with your loved one, a balloon ride in Armenia is a journey full of unforgettable memories.

Skiing and Snowboarding

The resort town of Tsakhkhadzor located only 40 minutes away from Yerevan is Armenia’s premier skiing destination. The slopes cater to all levels from beginners to advanced skiers. There are dozens of hotels in the area that range from small guesthouses to the Marriott chain.

A ski resort has been popular since Soviet times when the sporting facilities were built for the training of Soviet athletes. There are 30 kilometers of slopes and several lifts. By the way, even if you are not a ski enthusiast, do not miss a chance to take the ropeway in summer or autumn to admire the beautiful colors of Mount Teghenis and other peaks.

Water Sports

Sevan Lake and Azat Reservoir are destinations for water sports. In addition, to boat riding, windsurfing, and kayaking, paddleboarding is an activity that gained popularity among tourists visiting Armenia.  Paddleboarding in Sevan is a great way to explore the surrounding beauty of this unique lake.

Meanwhile, Azar Reservoir has recently been one of the most photographed spots. Dozens of people go there in summer to have Instagram pictures of their dreams. The good news is you can master paddleboarding after a short training and stand on a board with stunning landscapes in the background.
