Etchmiadzin and Zvartnots

The town of Etchmiadzin, located in Armavir Province just a 30-minute drive from Yerevan, is a spiritual center of Armenia with some of the most significant monasteries and churches. These religious buildings have historical and cultural importance and attract numerous pilgrims every year.

The town has a long story with evidence of its existence dating back to the Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages. Besides, the settlement had different names, including Vagharshapat in the past, but the name Etchmiadzin was used after the adoption of Christianity in AD 301.

There are three areas that are included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. The first is St. Gayane Church and the Mother Cathedral of Etchmiadzin, the seat of the Catholicos of All Armenians. Other inscribed area is St. Hripsime Church and St. Shoghakat Church.

Thanks to its proximity to Yerevan, Etchmiadzin is a must-see destination for all tourists. It is possible to reach it either by taxi or bus.

Zvartnots

Zvartnots is a cathedral lying in ruins which is a unique example of medieval Armenian architecture. Built in the 7th century, it had a circular structure with stone carvings and decorative elements on the walls. Most likely the earthquake destroyed the monastery in the 10th century. According to another theory, it collapsed as a result of the attacks from repeated Arab raids.

Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin

The two monastic complexes in the Lori Province of Armenia are the symbols of the highest flowering of Armenian architecture. Both date back to the Middle Ages and stand out thanks to their unique style. On the positive side, the way to the monasteries lies through the picturesque landscapes of Lori Province. You can visit it during one trip as they are only 15 kilometers away from each other.

Haghpat

The monastery is one of the largest ones in Armenia and it overlooks the Debed River at an altitude of 2,500 meters. It consists of several structures, including a chapel, chapel tombs, and khachkars (cross-stones). It played a crucial role as a center of science with a large collection of manuscripts and theological works. Although it survived numerous attacks and earthquakes, the monastery did not suffer considerable damage in contrast to Zvartnots.

Sanahin

This complex represents a remarkable ensemble of religious and secular buildings, including churches, chapels, and libraries. Moreover, it was a family burial place of the Kyurikyan Bagratids. Surb Astvatsatsin showcases frescoes and is unique thanks to its three-nave rectangular hall. There are more than 50 khachkars at the site which are one of the best examples of Armenia’s cultural and religious legacy.

Geghard Monastery and the Upper Azat Valley

This complex renowned for its unique rock-cut architecture, with some parts carved directly into the surrounding cliffs is one of the fascinating UNESCO World Heritage sites. Geghard means “spear” which wounded Jesus during the Crucifixion.  In the meantime, it is displaced in the Etchmiadzin treasury.

Geghard has a truly unique atmosphere. When you enter one of its buildings, it seems you travel back to the 4th century. The tourists admire its exquisite stone carvings, ornamental details that are great examples of medieval Armenian architecture.

In addition, Geghard is an acoustical treasure creating an unforgettable spiritual atmosphere. Listening to a female choir singing within its walls is a truly unforgettable moment. Stunning landscapes, and the monastery’s historical and architectural significance, make it a remarkable destination for tourists and pilgrims.
