During its long history Armenia survived many bad days and today we can proudly mention that Armenia is an Independent country with independent people and independent minds!
Let’s learn more about Armenia Independence day and let’s look back in the history and find some details about Armenian independence.
Armenia and the Soviet Union
Soviet Armenia was one of the republics of the Soviet Union. Soviet Armenia was formed in December 1920, when the Soviets took over control of the First Republic of Armenia and this control lasted until 1991.
Sovietization of Armenia
The Socialist Soviet Republic (SSR) of Armenia was founded in 1920. The nationalist Dashnaksutiun did not support the Soviet Union, but there were supporters of Soviet Armenia such as Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) who were happy for the newly founded Soviet state.
When did Armenia gain independence?
On September 21, 1991, Armenians voted in a referendum to proclaim independence from the Soviet Union. The first president of Independent Armenia was Levon Ter-Petrosyan who was elected in November 1991. Armenia became independent formally on December 26 because of the dissolution of the USSR.
Armenia Independence Day
Armenia Independence day is a public holiday in Armenia and there are many events and performances on this day. The whole country is celebrating the Independence from the Soviet Union regime. Armenians were fighting to gain independence, so every year they proudly celebrate this day.
Armenia Independence Day 2018
Every year Armenians celebrate Independence day with a greater enthusiasm and love towards their country. This year, in 2018, as always, Armenia Independence day is celebrated on September 21. The celebration starts early in the morning, as in every corner of the city centre you can enjoy many activities. Let’s not forget about the Armenian military parade!
The Soviet regime was harsh, many people died because they were speaking out their minds, but there were also good memories of Soviet Armenia. In spite of some positive memories about the Soviet regime, all Armenians were fighting for Independence gathering in the streets. At last Soviet regime was ruined! Armenians are free now and they can celebrate their Independence.
