Yerevan Wine Days 2024: Armenia’s Signature Wine Event

Armenia’s wine culture is blossoming. There is no doubt that Armenia’s wine is making headlines. The proof is the number of articles praising Armenian wine heritage. Besides, this year the country will host the UN Tourism Global Conference on Wine Tourism. However, the most anticipated wine event of the year is the Yerevan Wine Days 2024.

The traditional wine fest showcases the local wine culture and is simply a place to have the best evening of your summer.  Each year the event transforms Yerevan into a lively hub of cultural exchange and celebration. Live music and gastronomic delights add colors to the unique flavors of Armenian wines.

Let’s dive in and discover more about Yerevan’s most popular street festival.

History of Yerevan Wine Days

Let’s see how this all started. The Yerevan Wine Days has become a must-attend event in Armenia since it kicked off in 2017. This lively street wine festival takes over Yerevan’s Saryan Street popular for its top-notch wine bars.

Held annually, the festival settled into the first weekend of June. Over the years, it has grown exponentially. Each year the event’s area is expanding with 120,000 visitors recorded last year.

In fact, the success of the festival lies in its unique blend of tradition and modernity. The organizer’s mission is to put Armenian wine on the map and promote wine tourism in the country. Besides, there is a goal to revive ancient Armenian traditions. Transforming the streets into a vibrant hub of celebration somehow resembles the old days when locals organized outdoor parties, sharing drinks with neighbors and passersby.

Armenia’s Wine History

Wine in Armenia isn’t just a drink; it’s a work of art and a slice of history. The country’s winemaking tradition dates back thousands of years, making it one of the oldest wine regions in the world.  The Armenian Highlands, with their perfect grape-growing conditions, played a crucial role in the development of viticulture. This area is considered one of the cradles of winemaking.

Armenia’s connection to wine goes way back to the Neolithic Era. This was when people started cultivating grapevines in this region. Archaeological finds, like ancient clay vessels with wine residues, show that Armenians have been making and enjoying wine for millennia. These are not only words. Tourists can visit Areni-1 cave where one of the world’s oldest wineries was discovered. If you are touring Armenia, you have to visit to see the 6000-year-old storage jars, fermentation vats, a wine press, and drinking cups.

After gaining independence in 1991, the country’s wine industry saw a renaissance. Armenian winemakers, blending ancient traditions with modern techniques, have started making waves. Winemakers are reviving the ancient method of using clay amphorae, or “karas,” to age their wines. History lovers can also visit the Wine Museum of Armenia to explore history at its fullest. IIn modern ear Armenia’s wine culture is thriving with new small wineries and wine tours.
