Ciao Armenia: Adventures of Italian Ladies

Italy is one of the most visited countries in the world. It is often included in the lists of top countries for tourists. Just imagine there were 49.8 million visitors passing through Italy in 2022. Astonishing figure, isn’t it? However, today we will speak about Italian tourists. Can we expect to see more Italian tourists in Armenia? What places in Armenia do they prefer? We will try to answer these questions in our blog.

Levon Travel has recently had the pleasure of hosting Italian tourists in Armenia. Armenia opened its doors as a country of ancient history, stunning landscapes, and exceptional hospitality. Italian ladies who were our guests during this fascinating trip uncovered many hidden treasures that Armenia has to offer.

It was vibrant Yerevan, enchanting monasteries throughout the country, wonderful cuisine, and picturesque Molokan villages.

Classic Tours for Italian Tourists in Armenia

Italian tourists in Garni

It all starts with Yerevan, a compact city as compared to the big European capitals. The Cascade, Republic Square, and beautiful Opera House are worth seeing. However, the most attractive thing about Yerevan is its unique vibe and atmosphere of hospitality. The small size of downtown Yerevan definitely makes it easy to immerse yourself in its rich culture and atmosphere.

Any classic tour in Armenia cannot but include a visit to Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery. These two historic sites are located close to each other, so they are always combined in one trip. This was a delightful journey through history, culture, and nature. Visiting Garni Temple, the Italian ladies could feel the magic of a Greco-Roman colonnaded structure standing in Armenia, far from the places they are used to see it.

Next, the visit was to the Geghard Monastery. It is certainly one of those fascinating places where you can see medieval history and feel the spirituality. The monastery’s intricate rock-cut architecture is likely to captivate any tourists, and this was not an exception this time.

Of course, we could not ignore Lake Sevan. With its views of turquoise water and mountains in the background, Sevan is a peaceful retreat. In addition, there is the Sevanavank Monastery with its khachkars that adds a historical touch to the visit.

Dilijan and Molokan Villages

Our next stop during the Armenia tour was Dilijan, a resort town that will remind Italian tourists of Switzerland. Dilijan boasts a refreshing climate, rolling hills, and charming architecture.

The town is a gateway to numerous historical and cultural sites. The Haghartsin and Goshavank monasteries, both located nearby, are examples of medieval Armenian architecture. Besides, it offers a range of outdoor activities like hiking, picnicking by the crystal-clear rivers, or horseback riding.

The unexpected and exciting places to visit in Lori and Tavush provinces are the Molokan villages. The Molokans are a unique Russian sect that settled in Armenia in the 19th century. Their villages are located in a picturesque valley among mountains. The Molokans have their own humble lifestyle without using the Internet, television, and smartphones.

Here you can feel the pure life of a village that is far from traditional tourist trails where you find yourself in the 19th century. Distinctive customs and traditional dress provide a fascinating glimpse into the past. Visiting these villages is an exceptional experience. And, of course, our Italian tourists were captivated by this natural beauty and delicious pies prepared by local women.

Must-See Monasteries for Italian Tourists in Armenia

Italian tourists in Noravank

Some Italians may be aware of San Lazzaro degli Armeni, the monastery of the Mekhatarists, an Armenian Catholic congregation. However, the monasteries of the Armenian Apostolic Church differ in their appearance. Armenia is popular for its stunning monasteries, and two of the most captivating are Khor Virap and Noravank. While San Lazzaro is popular for its manuscripts and scholarly heritage, Khor Virap and Noravank offer a more rugged and ancient experience.

The trip to these historical landmarks opened a new chapter for our Italian guests. The location of Khor Virap with its panoramic views of Mount Ararat is striking. However, descending to the pit where Gregory the Illuminator, Armenia’s patron saint, was imprisoned for 13 years was far more exciting.

The relics of St. Gregory were housed in the 16th-century San Gregorio church and monastery in Naples. They were returned by Pope John Paul II to Catholicos Karekin II in . Of course, these connections cannot but resonate with Italian tourists.

Another example of unique Armenian architecture is Noravank. The monastery has intricate stone carvings and a unique two-story church structure. Besides, one cannot ignore the mysterious beauty of its natural surroundings, reddish cliffs and beautiful gorges

Both visits offer a chance to explore the unique cultural and religious heritage of Armenia, distinct from their own but equally compelling.
